The history of Fancourt Estate begins in the mid-19th century, rooted in the scenic foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains near George, on South Africa’s renowned Garden Route.
In 1859–1860, British engineer Henry Fancourt White—known for his key role in constructing the historic Montagu Pass—settled here with his wife, son, and daughter. He built an elegant family home called Blanco House, designed in the charming style of a traditional Cotswold mansion.
Henry White contributed significantly to the region’s commercial growth through infrastructure like the Montagu Pass. Sadly, following his death in 1866, the property was auctioned. It later returned to the White family when his son, Ernest Montagu White, purchased it and renamed it Fancourt in honor of his father. Ernest carried out extensive restorations, but tragedy struck again when he died from wild mushroom poisoning, leading to decades of neglect.
After nearly 30 years of disrepair, in 1960, renowned South African brain surgeon Dr. Roland Anthony Krynauw bought the estate and lovingly restored it to its former glory. The refined Manor House—now a protected national monument—stands as a testament to his dedication and preserves the property’s heritage charm.
In 1989, the estate changed hands once more. Under Andre and Helene Pieterse, it was transformed into a premier hotel and golfing destination, blending historic elegance with modern luxury.
