Isisombululo HIV & AIDS Programme
The Isisombululo Programme is an integrated, comprehensive Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention, care and treatment programme. It aims to reduce the rate of HIV and tuberculosis (TB) infections in the Eden District by strengthening existing provincial government health programmes and community initiatives. Isisombululo, meaning “Solution” in Xhosa, is funded by Dr Hasso Plattner.
Isisombululo is administered by the University of Cape Town and has partnerships with the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health. The collaboration with these key universities centralises world class expertise in HIV/AIDS research and intervention strategies across a range of disciplines from biomedical to the social sciences. The health department assists in defining health priorities in the Eden District and directs policy and interventions for specific areas.
